Four Fossil Fish Plate

Four Fossil Fish Plate
Silent representatives of an age long gone, these five fossil fish are among the most abundant species of fish in the Eocene age. Upon close inspection, it is possible to see the ridges and outlines of unexcavated fish, lying just below the surface layer of this fossil plate. From the Green River Stone Quarry in Lincoln County, Wyoming, these fossil fish are framed in rich wood and accompanied by a mounting bar to assist in wall-hanging. Diplomystus, a surface feeder as evident from its upturned mouth, often fed on smaller surface fish, such as Knightia. Priscacara liops was an abundant species in the Eocene age. Closely resembling a sunfish, Priscacara liops almost never reached more than 150 cm in length. Knightia, the smallest fish on this fossil plate, was extremely important in the Eocene age. Most larger fish of the age consumed Knightia. Rarely growing to more tha 25 cm, Knightia is now the official state fossil of Wyoming.
